چکیده

After almost 2.5 years of actively accreting, the neutron star X-ray transient and eclipsing binary MXB 1659–29 returned to quiescence in 2001 September. We report on a Chandra observation of this source taken a little over a month after this transition. The source was detected at an unabsorbed 0.5–10 keV flux of only (2.7 − 3.6) × 10 erg cm s, which implies a 0.5–10 keV X-ray luminosity of approximately (3.2 − 4.3) × 10 (d/10 kpc) erg s, with d the distance to the source in kpc. Its spectrum had a thermal shape and could be well fitted by either a blackbody with a temperature kT of ∼ 0.3 keV or a neutron star atmosphere model with a kT of ∼ 0.1 keV. The luminosity and spectral shape of MXB 1659–29 are very similar to those observed of the other neutron star X-ray transients when they are in their quiescent state. The source was variable during our observation, exhibiting a complete eclipse of the inner part of the system by the companion star. Dipping behavior was observed before the eclipse, likely due to obscuration by an extended feature in the outer part of a residual accretion disk. We discuss our observation in the context of the cooling neutron star model proposed to explain the quiescent properties of neutron star X-ray transients. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks — stars: individual (MXB 1659–29)— X-rays: stars

Monitoring Chandra Observations of the Quasi-persistent Neutron-star X-ray Transient Mxb 1659–29 in Quiescence: the Cooling Curve of the Heated Neutron-star Crust

We have observed the quasi-persistent neutron-star X-ray transient and eclipsing binary MXB 1659– 29 in quiescence on three occasions with Chandra. The purpose of our observations was to monitor the quiescent behavior of the source after its last prolonged (∼2.5 years) outburst which ended in September 2001. The X-ray spectra of the source are consistent with thermal radiation from the neutron-...

The Crust Cooling Curve of the Neutron Star in Mxb 1659–29

We have monitored the quasi-persistent neutron-star X-ray transient MXB 1659–29 in quiescence using Chandra. The purpose of our observations was to monitor the quiescent behavior of the source after its last prolonged outburst episode and to study the cooling curve of the neutron star in this system. We discuss the results obtained and how they constrain the properties of the neutron star in MX...

The burst behavior of the eclipsing low - mass X - ray binary MXB 1659 – 298

We present a detailed study of the correlations between the burst properties and the inferred mass accretion rate for the X-ray transient MXB 1659–298. The bursts which exhibited oscillations were observed when the source was at relatively high mass accretion rate, similar to what has been seen for other sources. However, due to the limited number of observations at lower mass accretion rates, ...

Optical and X – ray observations of the neutron star soft X – ray transient XTE J 1709 – 267

In this Paper we report on the discovery of the optical counterpart to the neutron star soft X–ray transient (SXT) XTE J1709–267 at an R–band magnitude of R=20.5±0.1 and 22.24±0.03, in outburst and quiescence, respectively. We further report the detection of type I bursts in RXTE data obtained during an outburst of the source in 2002. These bursts show a precursor event before the onset of the ...

Identification of the optical and quiescent counterparts to the bright X - ray transient in NGC 6440

After 3 years of quiescence, the globular cluster NGC 6440 exhibited a bright transient X-ray source turning on in August 2001, as noted with the RXTE AllSky Monitor. We carried out a short target of opportunity observation with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and are able to associate the transient with the brightest of 24 X-ray sources detected during quiescence in July 2000 with Chandra. Furth...
